An immersive musical theatre intensive development accelerator for promising storytellers.
Applying the model that accelerates technology start-ups, THEatre ACCELERATOR treats storytellers as founders creating an opportunity to interact with experts in storytelling, production, distribution, and the business of show business.
HOW IT WORKS
BEGINNING WITH BOOK, MUSIC, AND LYRICS,
participants develop their shows in a collaborative environment divided into virtual, residential, and presentation units.
UTILIZING CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY AND
lean development methods, mentors interact with participants, while THEatre ACCELERATOR team provides frequent feedback throughout the iterative process.
STAFF AND STORYTELLERS COLLABORATE TO
design a custom distribution plan that includes brand development and audience analysis to get stories in front of the right audiences.
Upon culmination of the program, participants may have the opportunity to pitch their projects to producers, investors, and other industry professionals for further development or production.
Aimed at identifying the ultimate market fit for each project, PHASE 1 is a VIRTUAL laboratory in which participants, Apples and Oranges Studios THEatre ACCELERATOR staff and leading industry experts, explore cutting-edge technology with traditional and emerging story development principals and techniques.
Successful members of PHASE 1 may be selected to continue the creative development of their projects IN RESIDENCE during PHASE 2.
Zeroing in on creative development, participants of PHASE 2 apply the lessons they learned during PHASE 1 on-ground in a live environment. Further refining the structure, characters, plot and music of each piece, participants work with professional performers and creative staff toward a workshop reading, production or similar lab presentation with funding provided by Apples and Oranges Studios. In exchange for a financial investment, Apples and Oranges Studios retains an equity percentage in the life of the show following a traditional accelerator model.
Successful members of PHASE 2 may be selected to continue further creative development or commercial presentations of their projects in PHASE 3.
With an eye toward commercial production, select projects may qualify for further development IN-RESIDENCE and VIRTUALLY by Apples and Oranges Studios or a partner production company.

The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization operating the state-of-the-art performing arts center in downtown Orlando, Florida. With its opening in November 2014, the performing arts center launched its vision of Arts For Every Life by being a gathering place for creativity and discovery; a vibrant urban destination where artists, audiences and students come to experience, explore and learn. The two-block community destination features the 2,700-seat Walt Disney Theater, 300-seat Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater, Seneff Arts Plaza, Dr. Phillips Center Florida Hospital School of the Arts, the DeVos Family Room, and other event rental spaces. Future expansion includes Steinmetz Hall, a 1,700-seat acoustical theater, along with rehearsal, classroom, office space and commercial development spaces. The next round of Phase I of THEatre ACCELERATOR runs September 18, 2017- September 29, 2017.
Applications are open and due no later than August 11, 2017.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Any writer or writing team with a completed draft of a full-length musical (including book, music, and lyrics where applicable) is eligible to apply for THEatre ACCELERATOR. Writers must have originated, and/or control, the underlying rights to their project and no attachments (such as a commercial producer or director) may exist. Projects may have been produced previously, but preference will be given to completely new works.
